Best Anti-Aging Supplements – Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Best Anti-Aging Supplements

In this section of the guide we will be taking a look at the best available over-the-counter anti-aging supplements. I have purposely omitted including a multivitamin & mineral supplement from the listings. Such a product obviously includes a huge array of compounds in each capsule/tablet, and would be impossible to cover in a single listing. However, I would stress that a good multivitamin & mineral product is an absolutely essential base supplement, and MUST be included in your program. Opt for a high potency, top quality product, preferably derived from whole food sources. Avoid cheaper synthetically derived products of the kind you would find on supermarket shelves. Some of you may be wondering why I have chosen not include the telomerase activator supplement TA-65 in this section.

Well, firstly, the essential anti-aging supplement resveratrol (and also curcumin) interfere with the effectiveness of astragalus based supplements, of which TA-65 is one.

Secondly, in my opinion, independent research results regarding the efficacy of TA-65 in humans appears inconclusive. I also find the fact that there appear to be no studies showing actual lifespan extension in animals to be a concern. Add to this the fact that studies showing the effectiveness of a relatively large dose of TA-65 in a cell culture, is something very different compared to a very small dose of TA-65 taken orally, where it has then to pass through the GI tract, before being broken down and filtered by the liver and kidneys.

Thirdly, TA-65 is extremely expensive, and I believe your money would be better spent on more proven supplements at this time. Should you require further information regarding supplements and their use specific to your own personal anti-aging program, then please do not hesitate to contact me, either to ask a question, or to arrange a consultation.

Best Anti-Aging Supplements – Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

Rating: 5/5

History: Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetylated form of L-Carnitine and is naturally produced by the body. In fact the body can convert L-Carnitine to ALCAR, and vice versa. L-Carnitine is a derivative of the amino acid L-Lysine, and was discovered in 1905 as a constituent of muscle tissue. Although your body synthesizes L-Carnitine in the liver and in the kidneys, it is also consumed in the diet, with red meat being a primary source.

Mode Of Action: Acetyl L-Carnitine supports cellular energy production by assisting in the transport of fat into the mitochondria, where it is oxidized and converted into ATP (chemical energy for the cell). ALCAR can also cross the blood-brain barrier, where it exerts an antioxidant effect, helping to maintain healthy cellular energy metabolism and brain function.

Anti-Aging / Life Extension Benefits: Acetyl-L-carnitine is an extremely useful supplement, which is taken in order to maintain, and even improve, neurological function as we age. To support this fact, there are numerous double blind scientific studies documenting its effect. ALCAR has also been shown to improve immune function and to boost energy levels. For increased effectiveness, ALCAR can be used together with Alpha Lipoic Acid (also covered in this section of the book). Both work as synergistic antioxidants.

Side Effects: No adverse effects have been reported with the use of ALCAR.

My Personal Experiences with ALCAR: I have been using this product for many years. However, rather than taking it continuously, I cycle it on a 2 months on, one month off protocol. The reason for this is that ALCAR actually continues to improve neurological function long after intake has ceased. Not only does this intermittent use save money, it may actually improve long-term effectiveness of the product. I use ALCAR at a dosage of 500mg taken am / pm, for a total daily dose of 1g. I have experienced no negative side effects. Please note that I use ALCAR in conjunction with Alpha Lipoic Acid.

Effective Dosage: 500mg 1 to 3 times a day.

Preferably use pure ALCAR powder mixed with water in preference to capsules, which may contain unwanted fillers. The pure powder version also works out considerably cheaper.

Duration Of Use: Using ALCAR on a 2 months on, 1 month off protocol, may improve long-term effectiveness.

Product Availability: Acetyl-L-Carnitine powder and capsules are widely available from health food stores and online vendors.
